Departmental Premier PhD Scholarship

Overview

  • Competitive PhD scholarships are currently available for highly qualified domestic and international students.
  • The funding amounts to NZ$17,500 plus tuition fees at the domestic rate (approx. NZ$5,600) per annum for 3 years.
  • The area of study is unrestricted within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • The successful candidate will have a Bachelors and/or Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related area) from an accredited institution.
  • Faxed copies of applications are not acceptable.
  • Candidates will be notified within one month after close of applications.
  • Please note that the Premier Scholarship award will be reduced by the amount of any other scholarships over NZ$5000 supporting fees or living expenses, for the duration of those other scholarships.
  • Closing date for applications: 22 Feb and 1st August

  • International students complete steps 1a and 2 below.

Step 1a (international students only)

Complete and submit to the International Office, the standard University application form applying for admission to the PhD program. Please remember, this university application requires:

  • Original or certified true copies of university academic transcripts that list the courses studied and the grades achieved. 
  • Test scores (TOEFL, IELTS) as proof of competence in written and spoken English where the applicant is not a native English speaker or has not studied in an English language environment. For details see the International Students website.
  • Original or certified true copies of university degrees awarded showing the degrees achieved
  • Application fees do not apply for international students.

Original University admission applications must be posted or couriered to the International office.
Emailed copies of the admission application are not accepted by the University.

 

Step 1b (domestic students only)

If you have not previously studied at the University of Canterbury, please supply academic transcripts.

If you have studied previously at the University of Canterbury, please supply your UC number.

 

Step 2 (all students)

Submit the following information to the Department of Mechanical Engineering for scholarship consideration:

  • Covering letter stating your reasons for wanting to study at Canterbury
  • A 1-page statement of specific research interests and goals
  • 2 academic letters of recommendation
  • CV or resume with work and academic experience, awards, publications, etc.
  • GRE scores (or equivalent) if available
