International Postgraduate FAQ
This information should be helpful for all international students who are contemplating doing their postgraduate Masters or PhD with us.
How do I apply?
Please visit the Admissions and Entry site where you can download an application form. Send in your form with appropriate supporting materials.
It is very important and useful for you to also include a statement (1-page minimum) on the specific areas of research interest that you would like to pursue at the Masters or PhD level.
How can I start to organize a supervisor and/or research area?
Look at our website and contact any of the supervisors whose projects interest you. If you can’t find a project or supervisor to match your interests, you can also contact the Director of Postgraduate Studies or Mrs Louise Barton who can direct you towards an appropriate project/supervisor related to your areas of research interest.
- Staff research interests are detailed in current faculty web pages
- Mechanical Engineering Research Groups
It is strongly encouraged that you contact the individual faculty members directly to discuss areas of interest and what projects they might be able to offer within their groups.
This information will help us to better review your application for admission and determine if supervision is available in the department. For more information see the Postgraduate Course Advice page.
Do I need to show that I can speak/read English?
Yes. You must have taken the TOEFL or IELTS tests within the last 2 years, or received a prior degree from an institution where the instruction and assessment was in English. For more information see the International Office Language Requirements page.
Which visa do I apply for and how?
You need to apply for a student visa from your nearest NZ Embassy. If you are accepted you will receive an Offer of a Place letter from the International Office. Take it with you as proof of your intended study at Canterbury as the embassy requires it to process your visa.
How do I organize accommodation?
The University has various types of accommodation available on campus but you will need to contact the Accommodation Manager (accommodation@canterbury.ac.nz) before your arrival if you want to live on campus. A list of accommodation off campus is also available at the above website.

Travel/medical insurance
All international students must have a Medical and Travel insurance policy approved by the University of Canterbury. If you arrive with a policy that is not approved by the University you will have to buy the StudentSafe policy from the University (approx. NZ$200 for 6 months). You cannot enrol without an approved policy.
