The Masters of Engineering Studies (Mechanical)
This document sets out the requirements of the Mechanical Engineering Department for students undertaking the Master of Engineering Studies (Mechanical).
Information and Enquiries
The University Calendar should be consulted for the complete University regulations. Further useful information is provided by the University Postgraduate Handbook and various Departmental information sheets. Initial inquiries should be addressed to Louise Barton, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Course Structure
Students must enrol full-time for not less than 1 year (and no more than 2-5 years when part time) and successfully complete a course of study comprising:
- PG 600 level engineering courses, some 400 level engineering courses, and some courses from outside engineering.
Details can be found at the College of Engineering website, in the Enrolement Handbook and/or the University Calendar.
International students who experience difficulties with the English language are urged to upgrade their competency in oral and written communications during the course of their enrolment at the University.
Admission Requirements
Candidates would normally have a degree in Engineering or another appropriate field. Although admissions and enrolments are the responsibility of the Dean of Engineering, the course of study for each student is approved by the Director of Postgraduate Studies in consultation with the student’s supervisor.
Applicants with degree qualifications from outside New Zealand must first apply for Admission ad-eundem to allow them to enrol. This requires the submission of a completed application form and supporting papers to the University, details of which may be obtained from the Registry or this Department.
Students may commence their studies for this course in the first semester at the beginning of the academic year or in the second semester at the middle of the academic year.
Postgraduate Courses
These courses have the same title and content as the postgraduate courses offered by the Department. The courses offered by this Department are listed in the Schedule of Postgraduate Courses (Mechanical Engineering), which is available from this Department. The courses offered each year may vary from year to year and some will be registered as Special Topics. The timetable has yet to be determined. Further details may be obtained from the lecturers involved.
For courses outside this Department, a list of postgraduate courses provided by the various deaprtment of the College of Engineering is available. Further details of specific courses should be sought from the Departments concerned. Pre-requisite course requirements and timetable clashes may preclude some courses from outside the Department.
