Degree of Master of Engineering (Mechanical)

This document sets out the requirements of the Mechanical Engineering Department for students undertaking the Degree of Master of Engineering (Mechanical).

Information and enquiries

The University Calendar should be consulted for the complete University regulations. Further useful information is available from the University Postgraduate Handbook and various Departmental information sheets. Additional information is available from the College of Engineering.

Although admissions and enrolments are the responsibility of the Dean of Engineering, the course of study for each student is approved by the Director of Postgraduate Studies in consultation with the student’s supervisor. Initial inquiries should be addressed to Louise Barton, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Course options

The principal option offered by this Department for a course of study towards a Master of Engineering Degree (Mechanical) (degree code 646) is the Master of Engineering by examination and thesis.

In special cases, approved by the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the Dean of Engineering, is the Master of Engineering by thesis only.

Programme of study involving examination and thesis

Students must enrol full-time for not less than 1 year and no more than 3 years and successfully complete a course of study comprising

  • A total of 0.4 EFTS (typically 4 courses) taken from the Schedule of Postgraduate Courses (600 level) and
  • Undertake a research project leading to the presentation of a successful thesis (ENME 690).

Part-time students undertaking this degree must complete their studies in not less than 2 years and no more than 4 years.

Admission Requirements

Students should plan to commence their studies at the beginning of the first or second semesters, which are the only times the University enrols Masters Degree students in Engineering. See the Postgraduate Studies page for additional requirements.

Upgrade from the Master of Engineering Studies Degree

Masters of Engineering Studies students wishing to gain admission to a Masters programme must enrol full time and obtain a B average or better in their courses. Successful students can then enrol for a Masters by thesis only for research in an appropriate project. In exceptional circumstances, students may apply for a change in enrolment to the Masters programme at the end of the first semester period.

Postgraduate Courses

A separate document giving the Schedule of Postgraduate Courses offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering is available. The courses offered each year may vary from year to year and some will therefore be registered as Special Topics. The timetable has yet to be determined. Further details may be obtained from the lecturers involved.

Courses from other departments

Students undertaking the Master of Engineering by examination and thesis may include appropriate courses from the Schedule for Postgraduate Courses offered by other departments. However, a minimum of 2 courses must be taken from the Mechanical Engineering Schedule unless granted special permission by the Director of Postgraduate Studies.

A list of postgraduate courses provided by the various departments of the College of Engineering is available. Further details of specific courses should be sought from the departments concerned.

Courses from outside the Schedule for Postgraduate Courses

Students undertaking the Masters by examination and project option may substitute up to 2 courses from outside the Schedule of Postgraduate Courses (eg: final-year undergraduate 400 level courses that have not already been credited). These may be chosen from anywhere in the University subject to the consent of the Head of Department. Advice should be sought from the Director of Postgraduate Studies, the student's Supervisor, and the departments concerned.

Detailed regulations as to ME can be found in the Enrolement Handbook and/or the University Calendar.
